Do Classified Advertising Correctly and Maximize Sales

Classified advertising can be an great way of getting rid of old stuff, promoting a business or even make friends. Done well it can seriously increase your traffic and sales. This article gives you simple techniques to increase your ads effectiveness and avoid some of the pitfalls.

Classified advertising has been around for a long time in magazines and newspapers. These have been overshadowed by the wealth of sites on the internet which are quicker and easier to use. You can post a free listing and within seconds make it available to the world.

The term classified refers to to the categorization of advertising in printed media. Advertisers paid by the letter so they had to get their message across as quickly as possible.

Regardless of the actual content, the sole purpose of a classified advert is to sell. Even if you are posting a wanted ad or trying to get a date you need to motivate the reader to perform an action. Make it as effective as possible by doing the following:

1. The headline is the most important part of the ad. If it doesn’t attract a user to click it, the ad has failed already. Your ad copy may contain literary works to rival Shakespeare, but if the headline does not grab the attention it is worthless.

Use motivating phrases like Secrets Revealed, Limited Offer, Don’t Miss Out etc. Try using formatting different to the rest of the ads, perhaps uppercase or with symbols, just try not to make it look like spam.

2. Focus on benefits not features. People want to know what the product can do for them. Tell them how they will be getting a bargain, how it will make them lose weight, be more attractive, get rich, Whatever, just appeal to the human emotions. Use words like feel, see, enjoy that appeal to the emotions.

3. Be honest and truthful and to the point. Classified ads are meant to be succint, their purpose to get you to click through, email or telephone for more information. The more personal information you include the more likely you can be trusted.

4. Improve your ad with pictures and video. A picture is worth a thousand words and video is even more effective. Plus most of the competing ads do not bother so you will instantly get more clicks.

5. End with a call to action. Instruct people what you want them to do and they are more likely to do it, eg Call Today, Find Out More Now etc

6. Check everything looks ok. Always proof read and check links as errors just make you look unprofessional. Test different combinations of headlines, wording, photos etc to see what works best and then use that combination on other sites.
