Buying Art On Ebay.
Ebay is the most successful auction site on the Internet. Is the art on the auction site safe to buy? The answer is probably not, especially if you aren’t an experienced collector. Though Ebay tries to ban those selling fake art, there’s just too much activity to keep up with all of it.
A recent search turned up 20 paintings priced over $20,000 on Ebay. Only a professional appraiser can determine if any of them are worth more than the canvas on which they’re painted.
Chances are you’re not going to find a Picasso or a Rembrandt on Ebay, but you could bid on an original Peter Max if he suits your taste.
How To Buy Safely:
Read seller feedback -The feedback system on Ebay will give you a lot of information on whether a seller is legitimate. Note how long a seller has been an Ebay member and how many buyers have posted positive feedback. You want to find a “Top Rated Seller”. You can feel relatively safe if a seller has a rating of 98 or higher.
Sellers also post responses to buyers who have purchased from them. Reading through those comments will give you a sense of how professional the seller is and if he takes his business seriously. Avoid any seller who says all deals are final.
You might see a painting on eBay that you like but you are not sure if this is a real artist. You may have never even heard of the artist. Do some research on how well-known they are and how highly priced their work is going for.
Ask the seller for some authenticity of the artwork Don’t enter a bid until you see it. The certificate should come from a reliable, renowned source.
Be sure to know the limits of your bid and be sure not to overbid on the work. Before you enter an auction, know what the piece is worth and stop bidding when the price goes over.
Watch out for fake items. There are problems with people posing as legitimate buyers who will drive the price up on an auction. There are times when these “legitimate buyers” are the sellers themselves who use different eBay IDs, or private IDs. Look at a bidder’s history. You can tell if they are likely not legitimate if most of the buyer feedback comes from the same buyer or if there is no seller feedback or if there are several retracted bids.
Many true artists sell their own work on ebay. Just make sure you are cautious when it comes to a purchase. There are several artists who publicize on their own websites. This is a good sign that you are getting an authentic item.
