Don’t Go For The Obvious When Buying A Pet

If you want to buy a new pet, we advise straying away from the very obvious. Of course, dogs and cats remain the most common and best-loved pet options, but other animals may be more ideal for your day-to-day life.

Having the right reasons to buy a pet is important before buying one. Having the right reasons is very essential. To use an example, buying a turtle won’t be the best way to go if you need an animal companion around the house. But for parents who want to get a nice first pet for their children to teach them responsibility, a turtle would be perfect. You may want to consider these other pets as useful, though unusual alternatives.

A lot of people may be turned off by rodents, but gerbils, mice and hamsters do make good pets for many others for quite a few reasons. Their small size makes them very easy to feed as they don’t really eat that much. Kids or even adults taking care of these pets should not be too shocked about losing their pet soon, because rodent pets don’t exactly have a long life span. Make sure to give your rodent pets the proper maintenance. This is because cages can stink a lot if not cared for properly.

Recent times have shown an increase in popularity for hermit crabs as pets - they can often be found in your nearby pet store. Obviously they are not cuddly and they don’t interact too well, but that shouldn’t stop you from buying one. Since hermit crabs drink from a sponge and also change shells and burrow, young children may find them interesting. Hermit crabs don’t require much maintenance except for keeping their drinking sponges wet.

Last, but not least are prairie dogs - a lot of pet owners have found out that they can make great pets too. Thanks to their pleasant nature and curious disposition, prairie dogs can be great around the house. Prairie dogs raised in captivity usually do not make any efforts to escape. Prairie dogs can run free around the house, though they can also be litter box trained for convenience. We must warn you, though, that prairie dogs like to chew. Prairie dogs need to be trained properly so that they only chew on designated objects, instead of damaging your house property and clothing. Since they are wild animals in the truest sense, make sure to buy them only from a trusted source.

If you’re looking to buy a non-traditional pet, there are other options to choose from. In summary, these three pet options are sensible choices and one doesn’t have to confine himself or herself to dogs and cats.
