Give These Points Some Thought Before You Bring A Puppy Home
Every kid wants a puppy to love. The soft furry bundles nuzzling their leg on a cold winter’s night are difficult to resist. So it’s hard to say no when you look into those sad little eyes, the pouting grin, the little whimper of tears, the puppy’s not the child’s.
It’s easy to forget that dogs are living creatures as they creep into your heart with their baby ways. They are a big responsibility and the expense of caring for them can be a huge burden on a family. Here are some things to consider before making the commitment to bringing home a dog.
Dogs are a Big Responsibility for Their Owners
Just like a newborn baby, domestic pets like cats and dogs rely on their owners - for everything. They need love and attention, food and exercise. Leaving dogs alone at home for extended periods can make them frustrated, bored and agitated. They may bark constantly, or take their frustration out on your belongings. Shoes, pillows and even furniture can be the victims of an anxious dog.
Can You Really Afford a Dog?
Before you buy the kennel, consider the thousands of dollars a dog can add to your expenses. This may be the money you have set aside for emergencies, or eat into your savings.
It can cost hundreds of dollars to purchase an animal. This is just the initial expense of the transaction. There will be several once-off costs - bowls, a leash, a crate, kennel, brushes and toys should last a while, although a puppy will outgrow some of them. But you do need to buy food. Dog food can cost hundred of dollars a year, depending on the type of food you buy. If you want to impress your friends with your dog’s gourmet food, you can add a few extra hundred dollars on to that bill.
Then there is medical care. Unlike the rest of us, our pets are not covered by health insurance. Therefore any time they get sick, need a vaccination, or if they develop a much more serious illness, that expense will come out of your pocket.
Before you take on the responsibility of owning a dog or cat, make sure you are willing to give the pet the loving care it will need. A dog will bring a lot of joy into your home, but a lot of time, work and money will be needed as well.
