Your Buying Decision Process Change Will Eliminate Buyer’s Remorse
If you have ever felt guilty after making a purchase, you’ve suffered from buyer’s remorse. Most of us make emotional rather than logical buying decisions. This is because we hardly feel the need to structure the way we do our shopping. Savvy marketers know this, and take full advantage of it to influence our buying decisions.
Although frequently associated with the purchase of higher value items such as a car or house, buyer’s remorse is equally a big problem with online digital purchases. It may stem from a sense of not wishing to be wrong, of guilt over extravagance or from feeling that one has been persuaded by a salesman.
Buyer’s anxiety may be rooted in various factors, such as concern that:
* you should have bought a different product
* you could have gotten a better price elsewhere
* a different model or version would have been better
* the product was illegally acquired
* you could have been given better terms for the purchase
* or the product is potentially unacceptable to significant others
Positive feelings usually warm us up before we make a purchase. However, we sometimes begin to experience guilt and regret after the purchase. We realize that we no longer have the funds we had and that there are other ways we could have used the money, or other things we could have bought.
Also, before the purchase, the buyer has a full array of options, including not purchasing; afterward, their options have been reduced to:
* moving ahead with the purchase, in spite of all the alternatives
* abandoning the purchase
Worrying that other people may later wonder about the purchase or claim to know better alternatives can help fuel shopper’s regret.
Clever marketing strategies used by savvy marketers help create positive emotions before the purchase. These create expectations that the shoppers’ desires, wants or needs will be fully addressed if they purchase the product.
A clearly defined and rigorously implemented buyer’s decision making process can greatly reduce buyers remorse. This is achieved by going beyond the marketing message and verifying that the product will adequately address the predefined objectives.
